history

The subject area of Industrial Design was established in the (then) Central School of Arts and Crafts, with the UK's first course in the subject in 1938.

The masters programme was first validated by the CNAA in 1976.

Central Saint Martins was formed from the merger of Central School of Art and Design with Saint Martins College of Art on 1st April 1989. Both colleges have long and distinguished histories and international reputations for the provision of art and design courses.

Central Saint Martins comprises three schools: The School of Art; The School of Fashion and Textile Design; and The School of Graphic and Industrial Design.

philosophy

Design is a complex intellectual activity. It increasingly demands that the designer go beyond the application of basic professional skills to first identify and define, and then resolve questions in contemporary society.

Increasingly, designers are called upon to take a pro-active role within industry, consultancy and society at large; involving them in strategic decision making and in the fundamental appraisal of our manufactured environment in a rapidly changing world.

The course aims to provide the academic and creative forum for developing the intellectual capacities to take on these issues. The development of design as an academic discipline depends on a clear grasp of the social, methodological, cultural and philosophical issues that define and inform the design activity

structure

The course consists of three Units, each of which is structured around one or more projects. In general each project will have a research element, a design element and a critical reflection, or evaluation element.

During the first year (Units 1 + 2) these are set projects that explore the relationship between a practical and theoretical approach to industrial design.

These are designed to give you the necessary conceptual and critical skills to be able to pursue a self-defined project for Unit 3 in the second (final) year.
