July 1st 2007, the Smoking ban is introduced, suddenly a public activity which has been going on for hundreds of years is outlawed to the outside. This forced change in behaviour opens up a whole brand new area of human interaction and the emergence of ‘Smirting’ a mixture of smoking and flirting. My project asks the question, can the smoking ban be designed for ? Be it in a superficial fun way, or a serious helpful manner ? Can design help in the this new ban ? Be it when you leave your drinks inside when going outside for a smoke, or can something be designed which entertains those left behind when friends are outside smoking ? Perhaps it’s possible to design for those outside in the cold smoking. Either way, my project aims to be timely, accessible, and highly topical and look at the smoking ban in a new light.
